If I cannot physically see the apartment , should I rent it?
If you are looking on Craig's List, ask the person who is renting the
apartment to send you some pictures. Many people take apartments site unseen.
There is nothing wrong with doing that if the people who are renting are honest.
The only sure fire way to know if you are getting a good apartment is to either
make a trip and take a look at it yourself or have a friend who lives closer
go take a look.
Where else can I look?
There are other sites online that advertise for apartments. Find the local
classifieds online for the city you are moving to and see if anything catches
your eye.
Should I rent an apartment sight unseen?
That really depends, some people it works out great for an others it turns
into a disaster. You can rent sight unseen but request pictures and do not pay
a dime until you have seen it or a friend has given it the thumbs up. For your
own peace of mind.
Should I pay the deposit in cash or check ?
If you are not going to be present at the time of payment then you should issue
a check, the cancelled check will be the receipt. Cash is fine when you are
present so that you can get a receipt but if you cannot get the receipt right
away then do not give cash.
