The University was founded in 1850 but in the beginning it was a Baptist sponsored school in the town of Hamilton, New York. Hamilton was already the site of Colgate University from 1819 but in 1850 the Baptist Education Society wanted to relocate Colgate University to Rochester by due to a legal stay they were not allowed to. So trustees from Colgate as well as the staff and students created the University of Rochester. Back in the day George Eastman donated a large sum of money in the amount of $ 50 million to the University.

The very first PHD was given in 1925 and by 1958, three new schools were added to the University, the Engineering School, Business Admin School and the School of Education. The University itself is run by a board of trustees and the board has the power to appoint the University president who is Joel Seligman. Today the University is home to the River Campus, Rochester Medical Center, Eastman School of Music, and South Campus.
