An author is someone who has written a book, magazine article, screen play,
poetry or any literary works. The author's work must be original and not
plagiarized. Some people believe that publishers and authors are the same but
they are not. A publisher is someone who helps the author's work get seen
by the public. It is also another common misconception is that only people who
have books in stores are authors, again not true. There are two types of authors,
the published and the non published. You can be an author even though you have
yet to be published.
You can be an author in different ways, you can co-write a book with someone
who may have more experience than you. You could be a ghost writer. A Ghost
Writer for those who have heard them term before but may not understand what
it is. It is an author who writes a book for someone and gives the another person
the credit. For example, if you wanted to get your name out there in the public
eye but you are not that great at writing, you can hire a professional author
and they will write the book for you and give you the credit. It may be your
concept for the book but another person's words.
People also believe that authors get big buck like world famous author J.K
Rawlings author of the Harry Potter Series. Authors like J.K make a lot of money
because they get a huge percentage of the sales from the books. When an author
wants to be published they make a deal regarding the percentage of who gets
what. The most common agreement is usually when a publisher gets a small percentage
of each book sold and the author gets the rest.
To become an author all you need is a good idea, good expression and good writing
skills. Before a book goes to print a copywriter or proof reader will fix any
grammatical or spelling errors you may have. If you have written an article
for a magazine or a book. Get together a list of publishers and make copies
and send them out, saying you wish to find a publisher. But you should have
your work copyrighted it eliminates the threat of theft. It may not get picked
up at first but keep shopping around. It takes hard work and determination to
become an author.
