Plagiarism is when one person tries to claim another person's work as their own without permission. Some people claim that plagiarism and forgery are the same. But with forgery you are signing someone else's name and plagiarism is when you take some or all parts of the work and say it is yours. There are times that plagiarism is not done on purpose, in many cases you are reading a source top get information for something that you have to write and you end up using the information per se in your work.

You see a lot of plagiarism in the academic sense. Students buy papers or copy straight from online sources as well as book sources as well. But students that get caught plagiarizing are unusually accused for academic fraud and can lead to suspension or even expulsion.

When you are dealing with plagiarism on the web, it can have a very negative effect on your site. When search engines send out spiders to your site to see what your site should be ranked and they see content that has clearly been duplicated not only are you going to get de- indexed but the search engine may not be kind to you in the future unless you clear up the site and add all new content.

If there is some information that you want to use from another place like a website or a book or magazine then all you have to do is put quotes around the information and make a footnote and give the person credit. Plagiarism is just wrong on many levels because you tried to claim the work as your own. It is really so simple to avoid, why people don't simply give credit where credit is due.

If you like some information from another site and you don't want to give the person credit then change the words around to make them your own. For example if you see and sentence and it reads, Roses are Red and Violets are Blue what you can do is add some words like We looked about the window and the roses were red in color and the violets were a gorgeous color of blue. You are still getting the point across if you don't want to give the original author credit.

You really have to just put some thought into it. Some creativity and your own words. The information was taken from some where else when the second person wrote it so why not paraphrase. There is nothing wrong with paraphrasing and you don't have to give anyone else credit.
